primitive art, naive art

speed the plough

large scale oil on panel portraying a ploughman driving a team of horses and cattle, this once common sight had died out in even the most rural regions by the early eighteenth century by which time the horse was used exclusively. the work was most likely painted for a chimney decoration or to be placed over a door. it was discovered in the lake district and shows similarities with works by Mathias Read (1669-1747) though in a style altogether more primitive. this is a wonderful, evocative and early piece.
